The Munster Police Department makes use of its Bike Patrol during the spring, summer, and fall months for a variety of special events as well as for neighborhood patrol.  Officers on bikes can patrol in areas where regular patrol cars do not have access, such as some residential areas and parks.  Bike Patrol officers can be found most often during the summertime in Community Park, near the Munster Skate Park, and the Munster Community Pool.

Bike Patrol officers are also present at community events such as the Munster Fireworks (July 3rd), the Munster 4th of July Parade, and during several other events where officers on bicycles can benefit the safety of the citizens participating (such as races and walks through town for various charities throughout the year).

The greatest benefit that the Bike Patrol brings to the citizens of Munster is the ability of the officers to meet and greet with the public on a much more personal basis.  Bicycle officers are much easier to approach and they are encouraged to interact with the public as much as possible.

Members of the Bike Patrol receive training either from outside agencies or from the Munster Police Department's bicycle training officer before being certified as a Bike Patrol officer.  Members of the Munster Police Explorers program are also required to be trained before riding along with a Bike Officer.

The Bike Patrol program has proven to be a valuable tool towards proactive community policing.  For more information on the Bike Patrol program, contact Lieutenant Kurt Matz at (219)836-6652.
